I had the pleasure of previewing the Jason Wu fall 09 collection along with a select group of Washington’s fashionistas last night at Neiman Marcus in Chevy Chase. Jason Wu’s director of marketing, John Murphy came to talk to us about the collection and give us a sneak peek at what’s in stored for the fall. This event was courtesy of Capitol File Magazine and it’s fashion forward editor-in-chief, Sherry Moeller.

The collection, which was inspired by Alice in Wonderland, is reflective of the times we’re living in, which is one of Jason’s strengths. He knows how to make a woman look and feel fabulous no matter how tough the times might seem. The detailing in design is so impressive and I have to say that the magazine and web photos do not do his collection justice. The breathtaking embroidery, pleating and beading are to die for.

One of my favorites in the collection was a lime green dress with black embroidery that made me want to max out my credit card. Jason’s entire collection is seamless and cohesive. You can mix and match to suit your style and price point. From comfortable cashmere cardigans to belted dresses, his collection is a feast for the fashion connoisseur. His clothes are far from trendy. They are timeless classics that fans will come to enjoy years after their debut.

The first lady was Wu-ed when she saw the creme confection of a dress Wu and his team made for her to wear on Inauguration night so it’s not wonder that she keeps going back for more. On her recent trip to Europe, the first lady wore a turquoise or teal version of the lime green dress below without the embroidery and paired it with a checkered cardigan.

The designer, who I learned from an insider tip, will be here tomorrow along with Diane von Furstenberg and Narcisco Rodriguez to urge law makers in Congress to pass a law eradicating counterfitting of fashion merchandise. I will be on a steakout on Capitol Hill to get a chance to snap some shots of Wu and DVF.

From what I saw tonight, fall is going to be a fun one. It will be full of color, fluid dresses, shine, tulles and a bit of structure to remind us to keep looking foward and have fun with fashion. The blue ruffled cardigan was to die for. The beading on the arm was stunning and worth every penny. Who wouldn’t want to look gorgeous in blue? Skip the black jacket and go for a blue one like the one below.

The line is going to be sold exclusively at the Neiman Marcus store in Chevy Chase. No other store within the beltway will carry the Jason Wu collection so if you want to snag something, you must make the trip up Wisconsin Avenue to Neiman Marcus in Chevy Chase.

Take note of another trend this fall; belting your billowy dresses backward to show off the front of the dress more effectively. Jason Wu’s favorite part of a woman’s body is her back so he took the time to create several pieces with deep v-backs, conservatively porportioned to add allure without too much vamp. His collection is a true reflection of American sportwear done right.
