Every true fashionista has dreams. There are things we want to own and places we are dying to go. If you asked any of us what were our most deepest desires, we would respond in the same way. First, is the Chanel chain link purse. Timeless, it is the ultimate “it item”. Next are a pair of Christian Louboutin heels. We really don’t care the style or color, they could be classic or edgy, as long as they have that red bottom. These are the two “must haves” in our closet. After these two, you would get different answers from people of their other desires. A Chloe blouse, Valentino shoes, a Fendi purse, a Marni skirt, a pair of Jimmy Choos. But my dream item? An Alexander McQueen gown. I have no idea where I would ever go in my lifetime to be able to wear it, but it is my most desirable high fashion item.
It seems that everywhere I turn this week, McQueen has been the most prominent figure in fashion. Sarah Burton, who took over for McQueen as creative director, designed Kate Middeton’s dress for the royal wedding. And last night the annual Metropolitan Museum’s Costume Institute Gala honored the late McQueen.
Lee Alexander McQueen, one of the premiere designers, left us tragically in February 2010. His work, representing feminine strength, gothic throwbacks to a more mysterious time, and immpecable tailoring, led us all to believe he was a god among men.
The one party I dream about attending before I leave this world is the Met’s Costume Institute Gala. The Costume Institute Gala is better than any awards show. It is the one time of the year where fashion is truly regarded as an art form. A celebration of fashion in epic, A-list proportions and is the dream of every fashionista.
Tonight as I lay in my hospital bed, back surgery (yeah!) I dreamed about attending last night’s monumental event to honor the man, the legend, Lee Alexander McQueen, led by Daphne Guinness.
Keep dreaming fellow fashionistas, next year one of us could make any of our fashion dreams come true, until then keep desiring the luxury we all deserve.
