V Magazine kicks off the new year with a “Model-Off” between fashion industry standard model Jacquelyn Jablonski vs plus-size model Crystal Renn. The photos, which were leaked last week, are now the talk of the blogosphere and news media, causing a commotion at the comparison of thin vs. thick models. Crystal Renn stands at 5 ft, 9 in. with 36-31-41 measurements, while model new-comer Jacquelyn Jablonski stands at the same height, but thinner with the measurements: 32-24-34.

The two models are talented in their own right and should not be faulted for their body types. I think the V magazine spread is a celebration of what each of us has been giving while advocating the use of plus-size models more frequently in magazine spreads and sending the message that fashion can be flattering on all shapes and sizes. Jablonski and Renn wear the same clothes from Ralph Lauren, Proenza Schouler and Dolce & Gabbana with bold accessories by Versace, Burberry and Alexis Bittar.

Many publications are praising V Magazine for this editorial and calling the issue “controversial.” I have to disagree with the issue being controversial because this isn’t the first time a magazine has featured plus size models in their spreads. Glamour and Marie Claire have been doing it for years. I do commend V magazine for incorporating the “size” issue into their publication but I hope they aren’t just hopping on to the trend. I hope to see more plus size models in their spreads throughout the year. The issue hits new stands on January 14, 2010.
