My high school days have long been over but the memories of homecomings and proms still live on in photos adorning the halls of my parent’s house as well as the pages of my photo albums. For many Washington, DC high school students, prom is something they can only dream of but never attend. Many under privileged youth in the city cannot afford to rent lavish limousines, dinner or even a prom dress to for this rite of passage.
…..Aaaaaaaaaand cue Once Upon a Prom. Once Upon a Prom, a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, is dedicated to providing prom dresses to young women who could not otherwise afford them. OUAP was created by three young professionals in Washington, D.C. who believe that prom is a defining moment in a young woman’s life.
On Thursday, March 27, from 5 to 8 p.m., at Urban Chic (1626 Wisconsin Avenue, NW), receive 30% off purchases when you donate a new or used dress in good condition to benefit Once Upon A Prom, a local organization founded to make prom dreams come true for girls who wouldn’t otherwise be able to afford a special occasion dress.
Donate a Dress: Donate your formal gown or fancy party dress (from 2000 to present). Please make sure donated dresses are in excellent condition, cleaned, and on a hanger.
Buy a Bracelet: All proceeds go directly to Once Upon A Prom and help with the costs of running the dress drive. The “Every Girl is a Princess” bangle, $55 (includes shipping).

Volunteer In May 2008: Once Upon A Prom will be holding a dress drive to distribute the dresses. They will need volunteers for one day to help fit the girls and hand out the dresses.
