Earlier this week I was at the W Hotel in Washington, DC for a secret project that I will tell you more about at the end of February.  The hush-hush project required me to dress up and look snazzy for a photographer (whetting your appetite? All will be revealed in good time).  I was given a room in one of their contemporary suites for the duration of my visit and I have to say, I didn’t want to leave.

The W Hotel DC opened a few years ago, when I still here and I remember the pomp and circumstance surrounding it.  I, along with my friends frequented the POV rooftop bar and restaurant several times a week and attended a few high profile events there.  We met Cristiano Ronaldo and the rest of the Real Madrid players there when they played DC United; I met the Gilt Groupe founders when they made their first trip to DC; I had several dates at the J&G Steakhouse prior to it being renovated again.  In the two years I frequented the hotel, I never once stayed there or saw one of the rooms.  Until this week.

I took the metro to McPherson Square – less than four blocks from the hotel – on one of the most frigidly cold days on record.  Upon entering the hotel lobby, I was greeted by two doormen, who opened the door for me to escape the cold.  The hotel receptionists welcomed me with smiles and a warm cup of coffee.  This gesture makes  a big difference when your lips are turning blue from 7 degree weather.  After checking in, I took the secure elevator – you’ll need a key to go anywhere in the building – to the 6th floor.  The entire hotel is calming and very intimate with dimly lit hallways that lead to cozy rooms.

My room was a Marvelous Suite, which had a living room overlooking the Washington Monument, a sectioned off office, a mini bar stocked with popular snacks, a Keurig coffee maker and a Bang & Olufsen CD player and smartphone speaker, two LCD televisions and a swanky king sized bed outfitted with crisp white linens covering a grey bed.  The entryway of the room has a cocktail caddy stocked with whiskey, gin, vodka and other spirits for entertaining.  The inviting L-shaped sitting area has large windows overlooking the Washington Monument.

The king sized bedroom was with inviting subtle grey color scheme throughout, including silver floor to ceiling curtains to keep the city lights out for a comfy night’s sleep.  There was ample storage in the form of dressers in the closet and under the television.  My favorite part of the hotel room beautiful bathroom with ornate gilded mirrors for dressing, a double vanity that proved useful for getting ready in a group and a marbled tub and stand in shower combo. Bliss Spa outfitted the bathroom with some of its much loved products in the lemon sage scent.

We had lunch at the J&G Steakhouse and were treated to some mouth-watering steaks, halibut, calamari and deserts, including the signature molten chocolate cake.  My favorite desert, however, was the deconstructed red velvet ice cream sundae served with a side of whipped cream cheese and white chocolate.

Martini drinkers cannot pass up the martini cart, with signature drinks like the Goldfinger, named after one of the James Bond villians.  The drink is the Vesper Martini topped with 24k gold drops.  It is as beautiful as it is delicious.  (A thorough review of the restaurant to come).

You don’t have to stay at the hotel to dine or drink at the restaurants and lounges at the W Hotel Washington.  If you want to stay in one of the gorgeous rooms, rates start at $210 a night.  So what are you waiting for? Just a stones throw from the White House, you’ll be a fool not to book your stay before the Cherry Blossom Festival, White House Correspondents Dinner or any of the must attend events in DC coming this spring.
