Ask any fashion stylist or editor the one must have item everyone should own and he or she will tell you it’s the black dress.   Black dresses are one of the most versatile pieces a woman can own because she can dress it up or down for any occasion.  These dresses also possess the power to make every woman look slim.  It’s no wonder Hollywood starlets and socialites flock to this closet staple for red carpet appearances, even in the Summer.

Here are a few tips to remember for the little black dress that can go from day to night and worn multiple times.

–  Make sure the hem hits mid thigh or lower but above the ankles.  You don’t want an evening gown.

– Keep the accessories very simple if the dress has a lot of sequins or embellishments.

–  Show off your best assets.  For instance, if you have great legs, opt for a midi length dress.  If you have amazing arms, show them off with a sleeveless or strapless black dress.  If your derriere is your best asset, show that off with a body-con number.

– You don’t have to match your black dress with black heels.  A metallic pair, a bold color or an embellished pumps will give your outfit more personality.

– Blazers, cardigans and wraps are your best friends in the evening when the weather gets cooler.  This also means you can create the illusion of a skirt and top combo.

– If you show arms and decolletage, make sure the length of the dress hits at slightly above the knee or lower.

The starlets pictured above illustrate the power of the black dress.  Emily Blunt look radiant in an allover sequin Marc Bower dress that hit just below her knee.   Eva Longoria shows off her svelte figure in a  conservative Victoria Beckham LDB with Brian Atwood pumps and Sergio Rossi clutch.  Actress Gemma Arterton opted for a midi length black dress cinched at the waist with a black tassle belt and black sandals.  Actress Demi Moore  showed off her arms and decollete in a fringed Louis Vuitton dress with Jimmy Choo heels and M.C.L. by Matthew Campbell Laurenza.
