How to Wear Polka Dots for Summer

I’m a sucker for polka dots of all kinds, particularly black and white.  Lately, it seems like all I wear are either stripes or polka dots, which are two timeless prints you can never go wrong having in your closet.  Most of the polka dot pieces I wear are predominantly black with white dots, however, I’ve been gravitating towards vibrant white dresses with black dots.  This combo is such a vibrant choice as we get into the dog days of summer.  I recently acquired this white polka dot maxi dress from Amazon, which got me super excited about this black on white combo and pieces that I’m loving. You can still wear this after Labor Day with dark and jewel-toned pieces mixed in.

My dress is currently sold out but I love this one-shoulder dress by Lisa Marie Fernandez and this one from Saloni, a brand favored by Kate, the Duchess of Cambridge. I paired my maxi with beige espadrille wedges from Express, which come with two ribbons (a beige and a stripe) for versatility.  My bracelet (similar), which I wore in Cuba is by Mignonne Gavigan, my favorite jewelry designer. I have needed a pop of color with this outfit so I wore my Kayu Pinata bag (last seen here and here). My sunglasses are by Illesteva, they’re the now sold out “Holly” model.  I’m actually eyeing the ‘Leonard II‘ from the brand as well.

How to Wear Polka Dots for Summer:

  • Stick with a dress and complimentary solid colors if you’re not comfortable with mixing prints.  For instance, a simple black sandal and black accessories will pair perfectly well with a polka-dot dress or a matching set.
  • Choose a single polka-dot piece like these sandals to pair with skinny jeans and a crisp white button-down shirt.
  • For this polka dot skirt, I would pair it with a black or white silk camisole for date night or a transition it into fall with a black turtleneck bodysuit or chunky black sweater.
  • I love the combo of jeans topped with a wrap top.  This polka dot wrap top would look chic with black or dark blue denim for casual Friday or brunch with the girls.
