As a naturalista with 4b/4c combination hair, nailing down the proper hair care routine is a must.  On wash days, I take the time to deep condition my hair after my oil treatment and shampooing.  Instead of spending loads of money on store bought products, I started opting to make my own deep conditioning treatments at home using ingredients in my fridge and pantry.  Last night, I whipped up a deep conditioner that left my scalp flake free, hair super soft and curls defined.  The photo above is after the deep conditioner with nothing else in my hair.

My wash day went a little like this.  I saturated my dry hair with my home made blend of oils and wrapped my hair for a few hours.  I then shampooed and conditioned my hair while in the shower.  After my shower, I whipped up my deep conditioner and applied it to my hair.  I then sat under my Conair hooded dryer for 20 minutes on low heat.

I rinsed the deep conditioner out of my hair using luke warm water then followed up with my Dove Pure Care Dry Oil Conditioner then rinsed it out.  The end result is what you see above before adding oils and creams before twisting my hair. I used three ingredients for my deep conditioner, which were Organic Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, Honey and two eggs. Why these particular ingredients? Coconut oil is one of the few oils that penetrates the hair shaft to moisturize, it stimulates hair growth getting deep into its follicles and promotes scalp health by fighting against such problems as insect bites, lice and dandruff.  The benefits of coconut oil also includes softening the hair and adding sheen, preventing breakage and split ends and slows down hair loss.

Honey is sweet for your morning coffee and tea but did you know it does wonder for your hair?  If you have dry or damaged hair, honey can help. It is a natural humectant, which means it attracts moisture. It’s also full of antioxidants and nutrients to feed hair follicles and encourages hair growth. Honey also has antibacterial and antiseptic qualities to prevent infections or psoriasis on the scalp and keep it bacteria-free. It pretty much aids in keep your scalp itch free.

Eggs are rich in proteins, which help make the hair follicle stronger and thicker.  Stronger strands of hair are less likely to break. Meaning fewer split ends.  In addition to enhancing resistance to breakage, applying raw eggs to hair smooths the hair, making it easier to detangle and comb.  Eggs act like a conditioner and moisturize dry hair.

  • Coconut oil adds luster, shine and softness to the hair.

First melt 1/2 cup to 1 cup of coconut oil in a bowl and and place the bowl on top of hot water.  You can also microwave the coconut oil for 30 to 50 seconds if you’re in a hurry. Remember measurements will be based on the length of your hair.

Crack open your two eggs and whisk them into the coconut oil until smooth.

Next add 2 tablespoons of honey and whisk some more until completely dissolved.

Section hair and apply mixture to your hair from scalp to ends.

Sit under a dryer on low heat for 20 minutes.  If you don’t have a sit-under dryer, simply wet a towel and heat for 45 second in the microwave.  Wrap around your head and secure with a shower cap.  Relax for 20 minutes. Rinse out with luke warm water then follow up with your favorite conditioner.
