Isn’t funny when a perfect night you’ve spent months planning ends up not so perfect? My thirtieth birthday this year was a very big deal for me, and my two best friends and I spent countless hours planning two fabulous nights out for my friends to celebrate my big day.
We planned the first party, just for four to include dinner and a night out on the town and dancing the night away. When the day came for my party, I had to make an impromptu day trip out to Connecticut for work. This meant I would be rushing back to Manhattan for the dinner at 8pm. I didn’t get back to Manhattan until 10:45pm, which meant we had lost our hard to get reservation.
I was so bummed I decided to cancel the entire evening. Heartbroken, I sulked in my room for an hour. Around midnight, my door bell rang, and standing there were the three girls with cupcakes, champagne, Red Bull and Grey Goose in hand. They brought the party to me. We spent two hours noshing on sweets, making cocktails and ordering food from my favorite late night takeout restaurant while getting ready.
We made it out around 2am to one of our favorite bars, where we proceeded to murder the dance floor until 4:30am. What started off as an awful night turned into one of the most unexpected and fun nights I had ever had. Needless to say, my thirtieth birthday became a night I would never forget.
Memories of my unforgettable 30th birthday came to mind when I saw the premiere of the new film About Time – A film from Richard Curtis, the creator of Love Actually, Notting Hill.
It stars Rachel McAdams, Domhnall Gleeson and Bill Nighy and tells the story of a young man whose gift allows him to go back and relive any moment of his life. But instead of making every moment perfect, he learns that life and love are most extraordinary when you embrace all of their imperfections.
I cried at the end of the film and will be definitely going to see it again when it comes out November 8th. Critics are already calling About Time “the first must-see movie of the fall” and “easily the most heartwarming, feel-great film of the season.” This is the perfect film for a first date, to take your parents or your best friends.
