American designers aren’t in the business just for the bottom line. Many are involved in worthwhile charities and some are pushing the envelope in fighting for causes around their communities and in impoverished regions of the world. Six prominent New York designers are being highlighted in the Spring 2013 issue of Gotham magazine for their extraordinary philanthropy endeavors.
Who could forget Donna Karan’s activism and philanthropy work after the Haiti disaster? Not only has the designer kept Haiti at the forefront with on-going fundraisers and relief help, she even highlights the country and its people in her designs each season. Her Urban Zen boutique on Greenwich Street sells chandeliers and handbags handcrafted by Haitian artisans.
Designer Zac Posen Posen’s philanthropic focus is on arts and education. He has been involved in TeachersCount and the Metropolitan Opera; another passion is New Yorkers for Children since returning to the States. Elie Tahari has been actively involved in Save the Garment Center in New York City as well as Worldwide Orphans Foundation. Diane von Furstenberg, Michael Kors, Rachel Roy are the other three designers featured in the issue.
